Which Marketing Culture Do You Want?

How to shift marketing culture

(By Gil Gerretsen) Mother Nature has a very interesting approach to sharing her products and services. As you look at the world, you can see different marketing mindsets and methods being deployed. Entrepreneurs and revenue people can learn much from the environment.

First, consider the trees. Trees live through many seasons and grow to provide shade for those who are under it’s canopy. They were vulnerable when young, but grew to provide life-giving protection to others. Some businesses are like that. They grow to become large enterprises who provide an environment that allows others to prosper under their canopy.

Next, consider the crops. They tend to prosper in large groups. When together, they can be easily cultivated to provide food to those who wish to participate in the harvest. When done, their seeds launch the next generation. Some business are like that too. They prosper in mutually supportive networks and collaborate to serve the needs of those who have particular needs. After a time, they prepare the next generation and then step aside.

Third, consider flowers. They can be in groups or they can stand alone. They bring color and beauty to the world. They make others happy. Their flowers may not last long, but when they bloom, they can be magnificent. The world needs them. This reflects some types of business enterprises too. They make life fun and bring joy. That’s why they exist.

Finally, consider the weeds. They are self-centered. They seek to crowd out others or steal their nourishment. Some are even poisonous. Nature fights back how and when it can. Some businesses are like that too. They don’t really care about others. They will do whatever it takes to enrich themselves no matter who it hurts.

My challenge to you is to consider which marketing method and culture you want to emulate. Will your business seek to become a tree and provide cover for many others? Will you be a crop that provides vital nourishment? Will you be the flower who makes life beautiful? Or will you be the weed that everyone hates?
