How To Find New Revenue
(By Gil Gerretsen) The world of business, and a rainmaker’s life, is always changing. So, when I first launched BizTrek in 1994, my mentor at the time taught me the following "mantra." He encouraged me to keep it central to my thinking.
“People who refuse to accept change will find themselves perfectly equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.”
My mentor reminded me that change is inevitable and that rainmakers must always be on the lookout for new sources of revenue.
Change can bring painful times, but it can also be the thing that creates or opens new opportunities. It can be a source of gold that was previously hidden from view. That lesson has been important to me for over three decades.
My mentor taught me that I needed to embrace change if I wanted to succeed as a revenue rainmaker. To be comfortable with it and to look beyond it to see what it might bring. To leverage the new revenue opportunities which might appear. To pan for gold as the river of change flowed past.
His advice, and my subsequent experience, have proven the truth of this mantra. I've learned that people who resist change soon tend to become irrelevant. People who ignore change also tend to become irrelevant. Rainmakers who thrive in change will excel.
As I have matured and grown my businesses, I've seen a lot of changes - both personally and professionally. As I have encountered changes to the business environment and navigated business plateaus, I have learned to thrive on change. In fact, sometimes I've been the instigator of change. In the process, change keeps my life exciting. I stay energized by new possibilities. Hopefully, it keeps my mind sharp.
So, as you encounter your daily business challenges, be open to change. Study it to see what revenue gold might be hidden from sight. Get down in the dirt, shake it around, and see what shiny new opportunities might appear.
Where are you panning for gold. Are there other places you should investigate?
