Watch Out For Creeping Mediocrity

(By Gil Gerretsen) Most entrepreneurs start a business because they want to do something better. They want to do it better than the employer they previously worked for. Or better than any options which currently exist. They think big at first, but sadly, too many downshift their vision and mission when they start encountering the inevitable resistance. For many, when things get harder, they let mediocrity creep in.

Mediocrity is the silent killer in business. It clogs up the cash flow arteries. It weakens the muscle that would provide necessary strength to climb over new business plateaus. It slowly eats at the bones of success as the disease of mediocrity takes hold.

Let me assure you that resistance to new ideas, new methods, new businesses, or new anything, is pretty much assured. You have two choices. Let the resistance wear you down and fade into eventual mediocrity. Or, stand tall and show those naysayers that you will not give up your vision and dream.

You must find your way to change your part of the world. Big thinkers are ultimately given a platform to make a difference for people who deserve better — whether they are your customers, investors, or employees. Or maybe even society in general. Stop looking at the resistance. Stop letting mediocrity creep into anything your business does. Rather, put on your happy face and then focus your time and resources on eliminating any mediocre business tendencies.
